Moana Bonilla: A Life Between Waves and Roots in Baja Sur

Surfing is not just a sport for Moana Bonilla; it is the story of her life, a family legacy, and a way of connecting with nature that has accompanied her since before she was born.

Childhood Among Beaches and Boards

Moana grew up surrounded by sea and sand. Her parents, both passionate surfers, instilled in her from an early age a love for the waves. Her childhood unfolded in a trailer by the beach, traveling with her family through different corners of Baja California Sur. For her, almost every beach in BCS is her home break, a playground and learning space that shaped her identity.

First Memories in the Water

Her relationship with surfing began even before she came into the world: her mother surfed while pregnant, and as a child Moana recalls the joy of riding with her father on his board at Acapulquito, San José del Cabo. Those first moments in the water marked the beginning of a bond that would never be broken.

Influences and Mentors

Her father’s figure has been central in her journey. A national champion more than seven times, he not only taught her technique and discipline but also passion and respect for the ocean. For Moana, her father is her greatest inspiration and the example that guides her style both in and out of the water.

The Favorite Wave

Among all the waves she has surfed, one holds a special place in her heart: La Roca in San José del Cabo. It is the spot where she shared unforgettable sessions with her father since childhood, the same place she now enjoys with her boyfriend — both grew up surfing there, and she loves sharing the same favorite wave with him. It is here that she continues to find the magic that connects her to her roots.

A Message for the New Generations

Moana believes surfing goes beyond performance. For her, it is a space of gratitude, respect, and connection with nature. Her message to new surfers is clear:

  • Be kind in the water
  • Share waves
  • Respect others and the ocean

Surfing, she says, is a reminder that true beauty lies in enjoying every moment carried by the sea. These are memories that become legacy, and one day will be shared with others.
