If you’re going to spend hours in the water—surfing in Los Cabos, Sayulita, or Puerto Escondido—a rash guard is the most important piece of your quiver after the board. Here’s what it is, how to choose the right one, and how to take care of it.
What Is a Rash Guard and What Is It For?
It’s a quick-dry technical shirt designed to be worn in the water. Its three main functions:
-
Sun protection: Spending 2–3 hours in the line-up equals intense sun exposure. A long-sleeve rash guard protects shoulders, back, and arms—the areas that burn most when surfing or snorkeling.
-
Preventing rashes: Its name comes from that (“rash” = irritation). It prevents chest and abdomen irritation against the board’s wax.
-
Thermal comfort: In warm Mexican waters, it replaces the wetsuit most of the year.
How to Choose Your Size
A rash guard should fit snug but comfortable: if it’s too loose, it creates friction and drag in the water; if it’s too tight, it restricts paddling movement. Check the size chart included with each product in our store (bust, waist, and hips in cm). If you’re between two sizes, choose the larger for casual use or the smaller for intensive surfing. Materials: Why We Choose Recycled Fabric
Our rash guards for women and men are made with GRS-certified recycled fabrics that recover plastic that would otherwise end up in the ocean—the same ocean where you surf. They’re also produced on demand: zero overproduction, zero wasted inventory.
How to Care for It So It Lasts Years
-
Rinse with fresh water after each session (salt and chlorine degrade elastane).
-
Wash by hand or on a cold cycle, without fabric softener.
-
Dry in the shade—direct sun cracks the fabric.
